Arrest warrant issued against BNP leader Rizvi, 7 others

A Dhaka court today issued arrest warrants against eight leaders and activists of BNP, including its senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, in a case filed under the Special Powers Act.

Judge KM Emrul Kayesh of Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court of Dhaka also accepted charges against 33 accused, including the eight BNP men.

The judge directed the officer-in-charge of Badda Police Station to submit reports on implementation of the arrest warrants by February 22 next year.

Former Dhaka City Corporation ward councilor MA Quyum is among those on the run.

BNP leader Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas and 24 others are now on bail in the case.

According to the prosecution, a group of BNP leaders and activists — led by Rizvi — brought out a rally around 8:15pm on January 26, 2015 in support of a hartal in front of Pran RFL head office in the capital’s Badda area.

They also threw brickbats, crude bombs on the on-duty policemen that left several of them injured on the spot.

Following the incident, police filed a case against Rizvi and 32 others with Badda Police Station.

On December 29, 2019, Jahidur Rahman, an inspector of Detective Branch of police, pressed charges the 33 accused.
