Around 100,000 billionaires in Bangladesh

The prevalence of Covid 19 has slowed down the economic pace of Bangladesh like the rest of the world but the number of billionaires in the country has mounted. At the end of June 2021, there are 99 thousand 918 billionaires in Bangladesh, according to Bangladesh Bank’s updated statistics. According to the central bank’s information, during April-May-June quarter of 2021, 5 thousand 646 billionaire’s bank accounts have been added to the banking sector whereas in January-February-March quarter of 2021, billionaires in the country rose in number by 382.

Till January 2021, there were bank accounts of 93 thousand 890 billionaires in different banks of Bangladesh. At the end of March the number of billionaires increased to 94 thousand 272 which spiked to 99 thousand 918 at the end of June 2021.Despite the contagion of Covid 19 pandemic, 10 thousand 51 new billionaires were added to the country’s banking arena from January to December 2020. Deposits of 68 thousand crore taka have been added to banks in this way.

Billionaires contributed to the bank deposits by 44.08% at the end of June this year. Total deposits in banks reached 14 lakh 39 thousand 763 crore taka at the end of June 2021.Till June 2021, 12 crore 15 lakh 49 thousand bank accounts were opened in Bangladesh. There were only five billionaires in Bangladesh during 1972.
It went up to 47 in 1975. In 1980, there were 98 billionaires in Bangladesh. In 1990, Bangladesh had 943 billionaires. In 1996, there were 2 thousand 594 billionaires in Bangladesh. In 2001, the number of billionaires in Bangladesh was 5 thousand 162. In 2006 the number of billionaires in Bangladesh was 8 thousand 887 and in 2008 the number of billionaires in Bangladesh was 19, 163.

BSEC chairman Shibli Rubayat resigns

Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Prof Shibli Rubayat-Ul Islam resigned today.

He sent his resignation letter to the official concerned at the finance ministry.

He stepped down citing health reasons, said Abdur Rahman, secretary of the Financial Institutions Division of the Ministry of Finance, confirming receipt of the letter.

The development came five days after Sheikh Hasina’s government fell and she fled Bangladesh in the face of a civil uprising.

Islam has remained absent from work for the past several days.

Islam, a Dhaka University teacher, was appointed as chairman of the BSEC in 2020. Last May, he was reappointed for another four-year tenure.

The 199th board meeting of Progressive life Insurance Company Limited (PLICL) was held in the organization’s corporate office in the capital’s National Scout Bhaban on Wednesday 10 July 2024. It was presided over by PLICL Acting Chairman M. Shoeb Chowdhury.
