Minister Group Dhaka captain Mahmudullah led from the front to inflict Comilla Victorians’ first defeat in the Bangabandhu Bangladesh Premier League Twenty20 2022 at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium Tuesday.
The Dhaka skipper struck his first half century of this edition to inspire his side to a convincing 50-run win, their third victory in six matches.
Comilla tasted their first loss after three wins in a row.
Asked to bat first, the capital city outfit posted a competitive 181 for the loss of six wickets in 20 overs, riding on Mahmudullah’s unbeaten 41-ball 70, featuring three fours and four sixes.
In-form opener Tamim Iqbal provided the early impetus with a 35-ball 46, studded with a couple of boundaries and three over boundaries, before the Bangladesh T20I captain added the late flourish to give Dhaka a challenging total.
Left-arm spinner Tanvir Islam bagged two wickets for the Victorians, while seamers Mustafizur Rahman, Shahidul Islam and Afghanistan’s Karim Janat picked up one each.
In reply, Comilla were in early trouble as they were reduced to 12/2 following the departures of Liton Das (nought) and South Africa’s Francois du Plessis (eight).
Young opening batter Mahmudul Hasan Joy (46) and national discard Imrul Kayes (28) then steadied the ship adding 70 for the third wicket to give hope to the Comilla dugout.
But after the duo went back to the dressing room the Victorians lost wickets at regular intervals and were eventually bundled out for 131 in 17.3 overs.
The West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell took three wickets for Dhaka, while Afghan spinner Qais Ahmad and pacer Ebadat Hossain notched two apiece.
Following the completion of the Chittagong phase yesterday, the six teams will now return to Dhaka for the third leg of the money-spinning tournament.
Tomorrow at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, Khulna Tigers will lock horns with Sylhet Sunrisers at 12:30pm while Chattogram Challengers will face Comilla at 5:30pm.
