Shakib al Hasan’s all-round performance lifted Fortune Barishal to the top of the points table in the ongoing Bangabandhu Bangladesh Premier League Twenty20 2022.
Barishal registered a 14-run victory in the nail-biting affair against Chattogram Challengers in the last game of the Chittagong leg at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium Tuesday.
Chasing 150 runs, Chattogram chocked against the Barishal spin duo Shakib and Mujeeb Ur Rahman, giving away three wickets to each.
The Chattogram innings, which lacked meaningful partnerships, lost wickets at regular intervals and Afif Hossain, batting as an opener in the game, topped with 39 off 32 laced with three boundaries and two over boundaries.
A cameo of 13-ball 26 from Mehedi Hasan Miraz and a three-ball 10 by Shariful Islam helped reduce the losing margin before Nasum Ahmed became the last wicket to seamer Dwayne Bravo.
Shakib finished with three wickets in four overs conceding 23 runs, while Afghanistan spinner Mujeeb, after missing out on his second hat-trick opportunity in the tournament, picked up three scalps leaking just nine runs in four overs.
Earlier, Barishal elected to bat first as Shakib posted his first half century in this edition.
The left-handed batter hammered 50 off 31 involving three fours and as many sixes before falling to youngster Mrittunjoy Chowdhury.
Barishal could have put more on the board had they not faced the debacle in the middle and lower order and got all-out with five balls to spare.
Left-arm pacer Mrittunjoy topped the Chattogram bowling attack with four wickets – three picked up in the same over, the 19th.
With four wins in six games, Barishal are top followed by Comilla Victorians with three wins from four matches.
Minister Group Dhaka are at No 3 also with three wins but in six games and with an improved net run rate.
