Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud on Thursday said that the human rights situation in Bangladesh was better than in the US in many instances.

Negating the US report on Bangladesh’s human rights record, the Awami League leader said that the government did not agree with the report’s findings.

“We think that information and data of the report were collected from some specific sources. And, the sources are one-sided and they have given false information to this end,” he claimed.

Hasan was speaking to reporters after attending a discussion organized by Bangladesh Sampadak Forum at a hotel in the capital.

Hasan said that, in many cases, the human rights situation in Bangladesh was better than in the US. There is no jail in Bangladesh like Guantanamo Bay of the US, a place of arbitrariness and abuse, he added.

The minister said that George Floyd, an unarmed black man, had been pinned down with a knee to the neck by a police officer in the US.

“Four persons were killed in the US parliament. Such incidents never happened in Bangladesh,” said Hasan, also the Awami League joint general secretary.

Despite these, the relationship between Bangladesh and the US had been very close, he added.

On the World Bank report that hinted at higher growth of Bangladesh economy in the current year, Hasan hoped that the people, who criticize the government day and night, would stop their negative criticism.
