Grameenphone contributes Tk 30.31 crore to Labour Welfare Fund

Grameenphone has contributed around Tk 30.31 crore (30 crore 31 lakh 35 thousand and 718 taka) amidst the ongoing global pandemic and economic instability,  to the Bangladesh Labour Welfare Foundation Fund under the Ministry of Labour and Employment for the welfare of the workers. 

A five-member delegation led by Grameenphone’s Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) Syed Tanvir Husain handed over the cheque to Begum Monnujan Sufian, Honorable Minister of State for the Ministry of Labour and Employment, in the conference room of the ministry today. 

“The government has formed a foundation fund under the Bangladesh Labor Act for the welfare of working people. This fund provides assistance to the workers of the formal and informal sectors for the treatment of accidental deaths in workplaces, injuries, and incurable diseases, and also for the higher education of meritorious children of the workers. So far in this year, around two thousand workers have been provided assistance worth Tk 6.25 crore from this fund,” said Minister of State for Labour and Employment and the Chairman of Bangladesh Labour Welfare Foundation Begum Monnujan Sufian at the check handover ceremony, adding that the Labour Welfare Foundation will always work for the welfare of the workers. 

On behalf of Grameenphone, Syed Tanvir Husain, Chief Human Resources Officer, said, “Grameenphone being a part of Telenor Group and as a responsible corporate citizen, has been an enabler of digitalization & development over the last 25 years. In this journey, we are equally focused on a future-ready skilled workforce to build a smart Bangladesh and stand by them in their trying times in collaboration with Bangladesh Government. We believe our continued humble efforts with the contribution to Workers Welfare Fund will encourage many others to come forward. We are thankful to the Labour Ministry for best utilizing this fund for the greater interest of our workforce.”

Around 165 local, foreign and multinational companies, including Grameenphone, have been regularly contributing a certain portion of their dividends to this fund. It was revealed at the cheque handover ceremony that the number of companies submitting dividends is increasing every month. At present, the amount deposited in this fund is around Tk 442 crore. It is mentionable that a certain portion of Grameenphone’s dividend is regularly deposited in the Bangladesh Labour Welfare Foundation. As the highest contributor to the fund, Grameenphone has so far deposited Tk 213,32,20,081 (Taka two hundred thirteen crore thirty-two lakh twenty thousand and eighty one only).

The 199th board meeting of Progressive life Insurance Company Limited (PLICL) was held in the organization’s corporate office in the capital’s National Scout Bhaban on Wednesday 10 July 2024. It was presided over by PLICL Acting Chairman M. Shoeb Chowdhury.

Shark Tank Bangladesh: Meet the Sharks!

The global phenomenon show “Shark Tank” is finally coming to Bangladesh as Shark Tank Bangladesh. Bangladesh’s top OTT platform, Bongo, signed a deal with Sony Pictures Entertainment to bring the world’s number-one business show to Bangladesh.

“Shark Tank” allows entrepreneurs to pitch their business idea to a panel of investors, known as “Sharks”, who can offer the entrepreneurs cash for a deal if they like the opportunity. Whether it is a prototype of a new product, an existing product or service, or a company looking for a financial injection to grow, the entrepreneurs have to convince the five “Sharks” to invest in their idea and help turn their life’s work into a household name.

Since launching in 2001 as “Money Tigers” on Nippon TV in Japan, the format has become a phenomenal worldwide success. It is produced in territories on every continent under a variety of names including “Dragon’s Den”, “Lion’s Den,” and of course “Shark Tank.” The format has seen Dragons, Lions, and Sharks, all hugely successful entrepreneurs themselves, invest nearly $1 billion through all versions of the franchise across the globe, enabling dozens of companies to grow significantly. Entrepreneurs who have been onboarded into the “Shark” ecosystem have seen massive growth and generated billions of dollars in sales after receiving deals and being featured on the show.

Shooting for the much-anticipated show is scheduled to kick off on February 12th, after having screened more than 2,000 companies to select the best businesses. Producers from Sony, Arch Dyson, and Kevin Hyland, who have helped supervise and produce versions of the show around the world, will be present in Dhaka to unveil the Sharks and oversee the first few days of the shoot.
