Nearly all of the construction work for the Padma Multipurpose Bridge mega project has been completed and authorities are putting the finishing touches so that it may open in June, government officials have said.
Following a meeting to review the progress of the project, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Sunday said 97% of the work on the main bridge has been completed.
“90.5% of the river governance work and 92% of the overall work of the project have been completed. Also, 99% of the gas line connection work and 79% of the 400KV electric line connection have been completed,” he added.
The construction of the bridge began in November 2015, with a view to connecting the country’s south-western region with the capital via road and rail. The project cost rose to Tk30,193 crore in 2021 after several revisions.
“Pitch casting on the bridge will be completed this month, as over 70% was done in the last two months,” said Dewan Md Abdul Kader, executive engineer of the project.
“Lighting on the bridge as well as road marking and railing installation is underway, ” he added.
“Some work is remaining on the approach roads at both ends of the bridge. The approach road to toll plaza at the Mawa end has been completed,” he added.
Although the bridge will be ready to open by June, some minor work will continue. For example, the power sub-station edifice will be completed by next year, the engineer further said.
Project insiders said the project’s defect liberality is one year, and any defect is identified within this time will be fixed by the contractor. China Major Bridge Engineering Company (CMBE) is implementing the main bridge.
One more year for river training
Construction of the main bridge will be completed soon, but the river training work is set to continue for another year. About 9.5% of the river training work under the project is still remaining, according to sources from the progress meeting.
Chinese firm Sinohydro Corporation Ltd has been tasked with river governance.
The government will allocate an amount in the next budget to complete all the tasks under the project by June 2023, officials said.
Secretary of the Bridge Division and Executive Director of Bangladesh Bridge Authority Md Monjur Hossain presided over the meeting in presence of Cabinet Secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam, Project Director Md Shafiqul Islam and other high officials of the Bridge Division.
