48 hours in, Chittagong depot fire still burning

The official number of deaths stand at 41

The fire at the container depot at Chittagong’s Sitakundo continues to burn after 48 hours since it broke out on Saturday.

Rakibul Islam, a Red Crescent Youth, Chittagong member confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.

Earlier, a special team of the Bangladesh Army identified four containers full of chemicals at the BM Container Depot that caused the deadly fire.

The families of some of the deceased have been lining up at the makeshift booth of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to provide DNA samples in order to identify their loved one.

The official count of the casualties of the deadly blast now stands at 41, among which 33 bodies have been handed over to families. The rest are still at the hospital morgue, awaiting identification.

Among the victims are firefighters who died in the line of duty.

Over 450 people were injured in the fire caused by the explosion at BM Container Depot in Chittagong late on Saturday night.

Although firefighters managed to bring the deadly blaze under control on Sunday night, black smoke is still coming out from different places of the depot.
